May means marathon month!!!

I have arrived in May with more me miles (677) under my belt than the total sum of the miles run last year (663) !!

My last long run of 20 miles was over two weeks ago and the taper is upon me, this is where I start saying “yeah I only have 14 miles for my long run this week”. It always amazes me how I go from ugh 7 miles is tough to running treble the distance in a couple of months, but needless to say I got there. It's strange that the long runs are getting shorter, I'm finishing them really knackered!!

Although I’m enjoying the thought of the mileage dropping, maranoia is upon me;  I’m already thinking that I should carry on running 20 miles just in case I forgot how to or that all of my fitness will disappear. Which is ridiculous and many a marathon runner can testify they will have had the same thoughts, I just need to keep reminding myself that the hard miles are done, the training is been successful as I’m still in one piece and slowly getting quicker.

There is around 2 weeks to go now until Edinburgh, my Bowel Cancer uk vest has arrived and I need to iron on my name, which is more taxing than running the marathon 😂😂

Getting Stronger ?? part 2

However this week it’s a different story; I'm feeling very tired and as if I'm starting with a cold; that scratchy feeling at the back of my throat and a lot of sneezing….. But I pushed on and carried on with my training.

With 11 hilly off-road miles on Tuesday with Derwent runners and I have one more 20mile run to do, but with working on Friday I was struggling to decide when to fit it in, especially as we had a busy weekend as well.  Then the idea struck me why not get an early finish on Thursday and follow up my 5 mile run with another 15miles bringing me up to 20 on the day.

Unfortunately my headphones gave up  halfway through my 6am treadmill 5 miles run and then despite hoping for an early finish, it didn’t happen  meaning I didn't get back home until 18:00.  But I pushed on to get it done, which I did but it wasn't pretty and it was getting very tough towards the end.

Sleep came easy but I didn’t stay asleep for long as my legs ached soo much and my general feeling like crap got worse and then before I knew it is was 6:30am and the sun was streaming through my window. After a long day working from home and moving furniture,  I  managed to get out of the door around 17:00 for a 4 mile run, whilst it was the best I had felt all day something felt off.

I've still been sneezing all day and felt like there was a cold lurking in the background waiting to pounce at any
minute. As the evening wore on the worse I felt and decided to take the next two days off from running to hopefully re-charge the batteries and perhaps it was the effects of overtraining and burn out….

So fingers crossed next week I started to feel a little more like my old self again, just in time for the taper!

Stafford 20 - take 2

Gosh what a difference a year makes, last year I ran Stafford 20 and to tell you the truth it was my worse race of the year, but I learnt from my experience and prepared better this year. Last year I didn’t respect the distance, I got a little cocky  having nearly covered the distance in training I was thinking how hard could it be…..well it truly spanked me!!

So this year was personal, I needed to draw a line under last year and it was a good way to test how my Marathon preparation was going. Despite having a cold in the week before the race I made sure that I didn’t panic run and got plenty of rest and sleep, so come race day I was fully fit.  Also I made sure that this year I properly hydrated for at least 3 days before the race and ate sensibly, which was a big difference to last year.

Sunday morning came around fast and it was as if we had travelled back to January in terms of the weather; an artic wind blew in and there was light snow fall…. but nothing was going to throw me off my positive state of mind....my belt was packed with 1 gel, 2 bags of Jelly Babies (a bag full of black jellies for lap 2 and red for lap 3) and 3 sugar barley sweets….Jill Phillips (fellow club runner) has a lot to answer for!!!! I dressed and then re-dressed for the conditions and headed off to Stafford.

Race HQ was a sea of people all huddling to keep warm inside the Uni buildings and there was a colour array of those brave souls in the racing singlet’s and shorts, those in full ski gear and those in between.  This year I made sure I made use of the facilities (twice), it is long and lonely run if you find you want to go half way around as I found to my cost last year. Quite understandably the small local races just can’t provide these types of facilitates on the course route, so you have to make sure you take responsibility for you own needs.

Before we knew it we were off; I had decided to try and beat 3 hours so I was looking to run around Marathon pace of 9 minute miles and I felt good (cold but good) out there.  This year I knew what was coming so I was prepared, I knew I had done everything right and miles in the bank so everything should be ok; other than frost bite, polar bears and having to help push a stranded drive that broke down at the top of the largest hill!! A poor lady had broken down right in the route of the runners and she wasn’t sure what to do, so a kind runner jumped the driver’s seat and we all pushed the car on to the side of the road and then carried on running as if nothing had happened……something only runners would do.

My strategy was to not sit down(!!) and feel good all the way round and I achieved 99% of my goal; the last quarter of a mile really took it out of me and then Walter from my running Club  Trentham appeared to help run me home and boy I was so grateful !  But I will have to apologies I am sure the last bit I was making some rather disturbing noises as I was panting and puffing to finish strong, but I am sure he is a gentleman and not mention it!

Lap 1
All in all I had a much better run than last year; I finished in 2:54:40, a good 30 odd minutes better than last year and nearly 4 minutes of my PB for 20miles.  It really gave me confidence for the Virgin London Marathon which is getting ever closer!

Stafford 20 – not my day – but I triumphed & finished!!!

Well it has finally come around to the Stafford 20 road race, it all seemed like a good idea when I entered a few months ago!!  It is a 3 loop race around Stafford, Weston, Salt, Hopton and surrounds, the 1st is the longest for 8 miles and though hilly Salt, the next 2 laps are 6 miles, less of a climb but you will have to run past the county showground again another 2 times .  The actual route can be found on Map My Run  Stafford 20
Although I thought I had prepared well for the event but the actually day was a different story  The weather was great and the sun was out .  Met up with my running partner Sharon and also caught up with the other Potters Trotters, some of the Trentham lot and Mark ( my twitter friends) and we wish each other good luck  .
Sharon & KirstenI was a little daunted by the distance but thought that I had put in the training and I could easily achieve my goal of finishing in 3 hours, the start was good Sharon and had agreed to run together and our aim was 9 minutes miles, however the 1st hill was my downfall.  I started to slow down and told Sharon to carry on, 3 miles in and I was done for  I felt sick, I needed to go to the loo and putting one foot in front of the seemed to be impossible, so I stopped took a minute, plugged in my head phones decided that I would make it around to Sean (near the Uni where the finish was) and give up there.
I made it round to Sean (7.50 miles), nipped off to the loo (the less said about that the better) had some more water and words of encouragement (from Sean) and carried on, determined to complete at least one more lap .  With Jelly Bellies in hand with another bottle of water I started out again , the 2nd time pasted the county show was difficult  but I didn’t stop it was pretty and it wasn’t quick but I made it, just passed Hopton I scoffed down the and it was like been turbo charged!! and I made it back around to Sean.  This time I was ready to give up, I had a good run made it around and completed 14 miles, then I saw a Potter Trotter top and decided yes I could make one more lap, I am not a quitter I WILL FINISH!!!  and finish I did; the time wasn’t great but I have a well earned mug , which I have not stopped using yet!!

Has this put me off running, nah my next run is Sunday and it is the Liverpool half….and before you ask yes I have already started looking for my next 20 mile race so I can beat my official race time of 3:28Sad smile
